Christmas Series Week 3

Rev. Frank Morris preaches his Sermon "When Sheperds Shout"

An Angel notified the shepherds of Jesus’ birth and immediately, they spread the news of it. The significance of the figurative use of the term shepherd and sheep throughout  Scripture particularly as it relates Jesus and the people of God.

It is to be wondered that the vocation of the shepherd is one of the most expressive metaphors used in so many ways in the Bible? Spiritual overseers are “shepherds” or “pastors”. Pastor is a Latin word for “shepherd” (Psalm 23:1 ; 80:1)
Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Bethlehem signifies House of Bread , a proper place for the birth of Him who is the Bread of Life, that came down from heaven. It is noteworthy that God’s people are described in Scripture as sheep.

I. THE SHEPHERDS VOCATION IS DESCRIPTIVE OF:
1. The need for direction and leadership.
“And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were like sheep which have no shepherd.”  Num. 27:17

2. God’s Ownership.
“To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own by name and leads them out.
 John 10:3

3. God’s care for His children.
The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. Psalm 23:1

4. God’s protection of His people.
The Lord will protect you from all evil; He will keep your soul. Psalm 121:7

II. JESUS IS UNIQUELY SET APART FROM THESE UNDER-SHEPHERDS.
1. Jesus is the one  and only Shepherd of the sheep who have gone their own way.
Jesus said to him, ” I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.            John 14:6

2. Jesus is the Good Shepherd.
I am the Good Shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.  John 10:11

3. Jesus is the Great  Shepherd.
Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord. Hebrews 13:20

 4. Jesus is the Chief Shepherd.
And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading  crown of glory. 1 Peter 5:4

III. THE SHEPHERDS ABIDING IN THE FIELD DID FOUR THINGS THAT NIGHT:

1. They received the gospel with humility joy and gladness (see Luke 2:9, 15)
2. They went to see Jesus for themselves (see Luke 2:16)
3. They broadcast (made widely known) the Savior’s birth (see Luke 2:17)
4. They returned praising God for all they heard and saw. (see Luke 2:20)
